From Pelee Island to Japan

Randy S. and I headed to Pelee Island to meet the crew for our 2007 Pheasant hunt ... ( for more details on Pelee check out the link from 2006 below )

http://www.acadventures.ca/pelee-island-2006.html

My dog Sally split her chest open on a jagged rock when she went to retrieve a bird from the lake , within the 1st 2hrs of the hunt , but not before she moved many birds to the gun ..... Lucky one of our Pelee crew is a Vet , he flushed the wound out and stiched the nasty gash up .... But it put her out of the roll call for the duration of the hunt .... So " Spike " was my partner for the rest of the hunt ..... I also gunned over Randy S. and Randy A's dogs .... Our group finished our group total off by the afternoon of the 2nd day , and we had a blast playing cards , telling jokes , catching up , between cleaning birds and hardy meals !

I didn't take as many pictures as I usually do but here are some I did get ...

Parked the truck on the slate rock beach for a shot of the lake as rafts of birds moved by in the background ...

Randy and I took a drive around the evening before the hunt and I snapped pictures of 2 nice cock birds ...

Also Pelee is developing a beauty turkey population ....

I tried to get some flush and shot pictures as the guys worked fence lines between the bean fields .... but only got 1 picture of a hen passing back towards me ....

Another feathered resident ....

Left the Island and travelled to Japan for another work related dispatch ... the skys were cloudy so no ground visable for the duration of the trip ...

Busy week ... but no work this weekend so I headed out of town today , over the bridge past Toyota stadium to hike some farm fileds looking for Photo op's ....

Most fields are inactive , and what farm equipment there is sits idle as the second planting continues to grow ...

Many " Yellow Legs " .... but the Pheasants were scarce ....

Moved to another location, I followed the canal towards the spot where Tom P. and I tried carp fishing ....

Eventually came apon a guy fighting a carp , it wasn't cooperating close to the wall so I jumped down into the drainage and netted it for him .... ( Kazuya Narita and his wife Kimiyo )

He was quite happy I helped and gave me a beauty hand carved sinking minnow lure as a gift .... he makes them himself and air brush paints them as well ...

Headed back towards town and I eventually bumped a cock Pheasant ... only got 1 shot as he flew across the field ....

As I got closer to town I came apon a field of purple and white flowers ....

Also some other small patches of other flowers ...

And of course there are always lots of big spiders around the fields as well ....

That was my " walk about " for today .... Would rather be hunting Whitetails ! .... Will be back at it soon enough though !

Page Break , Sunday Nov 4th ...

Added a couple of pictures for my wife and daughter ... from a " walk about " in Nagoya at the outdoor market ...

This pigeon is looking at me like " step away fom the statue , strange looking foreign man ! " ... ( he had lots of back up so I left them alone ! ) Laughing

Not sure what this dudes fashion statement was supose to be ? He was all camoed out with fake hand grenades , side arm etc. ... and he was packing a couple of killer pooches as well !  Laughing

Some amazing doggies that actually understand Japanese ! Laughing

And last but not least .... this little guy had no bottom teeth and couldn't keep his tounge in his mouth ..... At least that's what they told me ... maybe he just didn't like foreigners !   Laughing

Nov 17th , 18th ....

Finally found some deer here ! ....

First off congrat's to all that have harvested Whitetails over the past few weeks ! .... Great looking deer , great stories , and great memories ...

I've got 3 more sleeps until I head back to Ontario ... settle in with the family and start chasing those hollow-hairs !

I visited Nara , Hiroshima , and Miyajima on Saturday / Sunday ...

Deer are sacred in Nara and Miyajima ( tied in with the gods ) ... In the lower areas they walk around with the people through the streets ... any bucks or stags have their horns cut .... but if you get higher up in the hills you can get some cool photos in natural suroundings ...

Here are some photo op's that caught my eye ...

If you zoom in , you can see the reflection of me in his eye ...

This is what is left of the Hiroshima Prefrecture Hall 62 years after the bomb ... it has been shored up and supported to remain as a monument ...

Took a boat across to Miyajima .... they have a Gondola that goes up into the mountains and you can get pictures of Monkeys in the trees , but it was shutdown due to high wind .... these are the shots I did get ...

And heading back I saw this deer picking seaweed along the shoreline ...

Good luck to all that are heading into the field .... I'll be home soon , and hope to bring up our team score !

Flew home yesterday afternoon .... Took 1 shot of Mt Fuji from the window of the plane ....

We transfered in Detroit and I snapped a picture of some more familiar looking country side .... I kept looking out and thinking " That looks like some beauty whitetail habitat ! "

Was happy to see we had some snow when I landed at Waterloo Regional Airport .... I'm itching to get into the field now !!

Spent yesterday afternoon with the family .... Today my daughter had school and my wife had plans to do some Christmas Shopping with her Mom ... I told my wife last night , I would help with the shopping tomorrow if she wanted me to ... she held her hand up to my head to check if I had a fever ! Laughing Laughing She said she had the Christmas shopping covered and gave me the thumbs up for a day in the field ! .... Yeah baby ! >>>

I had previously planned a Saskatchewan hunt for next week , but it fell thru , and I was happy to stay close to home anyhow ... I checked the MNR regs since I had heard that some areas were close for MZ until Nov 25th ? .... I hunt WMU 80 and it was good to go from Nov 12th to Dec 2nd .... Yeah baby ! >>>

Took a morning stand and passed on two fawns .... Scouted other farms thru the day ... saw the usual players .. turkeys and geese ... man it's great to be back in Ontario !

The wind was out of the North today so I had to switch up my stand choice .... I finally decided to relocate to a climber tree that has paid off in the past ....

At approx 4:45 pm I saw two does feeding in a field near where I had parked my truck ... A young buck was following them ... While I was watching them I witnessed one of the doe's flagging the buck ( two times confirmed in the binoc's )

Wabi had sent me two new Cooper Grunt calls while I was away and I brought one with me ... I tried a couple of contact grunts but they didn't seem to notice me yet ... About 5 mins later , they start to cross from the field by my truck and head my way .... the doe's cross approx 70 yards in front of me .... the buck is following behind ... he doesn't look swelled up too much but was definately following !

I tried again to hit him with some contact grunts but he stayed his course ( I'm losing him ! ) .... I stretched the grunt tube over my shoulder and gave 3 sharp loud tending bark / grunts .... he immediately snapped my way and when he turned broadside at 35 yards I slapped the trigger of my Vortex and launched a 2216 with a 130 grain Wasp Camlock broadhead on board right behind his shoulder ... he squated at the sound of the release , and the arrow hit high , but it did the trick and he expired within sight of the tree I was in ....

A beauty young 8 point and a great ending to an awsome day in the Ontario outdoors !

I only got a couple quick shots of him after I dragged him back to the trail and I gathered my gear ( man , did he stink , he had scented himself up big time ! ) ... ( I sent the tagged shot to Kenton , to score as a doe for the Backstraps and Butter team ! )

Chris H. helped me get him to the butcher on the way home ... Our butcher got the 2007 crests in but no hats yet .... he gave me 1 crest from my Oct 6th doe and 1 crest for todays deer ... Here is a shot of the 2007 crests ... 1 of my Cooper Calls ( came thru again for me ) ! and a small piece of antler artwork from Japan ...

I covered alot of ground today .... didn't see any fresh scrapes , but the way this group of deer acted I figure the young buck was cruising for leftovers .... he definately reacted to the sharp tending bark/grunt .. and he stunk like rut ... I could smell him from 10 feet away !

PS : Hey Comfy ... does that string look familiar ! Laughing

Man it's great to be home !!!
